On March 22nd, independent visual novel game developer Aeon Dream Studios (ADS) released the first half of their visual novel demo, To the Edge of the Sky. To the Edge of the Sky is touted as a free fan-made demo based on the popular South Korean boy band, Bangtan Boys, commonly known internationally as BTS.
The demo itself represents only a small part of a larger game concept and is an attempt to gauge BTS fans—known as ARMY—feedback on the idea of creating visual novels based on the group story concepts for both international and domestic fans. Although the demo currently only exists in English, the team plans translations into other languages were it to become a full-fledged commercial project. The story’s description is as follows:
Enter the year 2077 and become Seven, the newest addition to Phantom Alpha, a secret team who operates under the enigmatic government organization known as P.H.A.N.T.A.S.M.
After joining, you find yourself befriending the other rookie on the team, an incredibly skilled youth known to you only as Zero. As you meet the other members, you realize that despite being a team, they all vary drastically in personality, background, talent and ability.
Regardless of your differences, Phantom Alpha diligently completes missions alongside each other. But together, you soon discover that on the other side of the radiant world of light, lies an equally dark world of shadows…
The team at ADS hopes to show the demo to BigHit Entertainment and discuss the opportunity to officially license and work together on the game. If the game concept is not made into a full-scale commercial project between BigHit Entertainment and Aeon Dream Studios, ADS has stated that after they release the second part of the demo, they have no plans to release further content for To the Edge of the Sky.
BTS are known for their concept stories throughout their albums that are filled to the brim with symbolism befitting classic literature more than K-pop. ADS has taken inspiration from those concepts in order to create an original world and story expanding upon those themes. The story takes place in a near-future, post-apocalyptic alternate universe with characters based on the members both visually and in personality. ADS has said they were extremely careful in creating the characters inspired by the members, developing original characters with their own unique backstories and lives.
Members and volunteers of ADS also visited BTS’ Wings Tour concerts both days in Newark, NJ and one day in Chicago, IL to hand out limited promotional art of the demo. Their goal was to spread the word about the initiative and talk to international ARMY in person. While feedback for both the idea and the demo itself has been hugely positive, ADS has stated they are still in the process of trying to reach out to the small, but immensely popular South Korean company in hopes of being able to develop the game for BTS’ ARMY all over the world.
